Colorful circus gender neutral nursery for baby Peanut – The reveal!

I’ve shared a most of the nursery projects I worked on already, so most of you have an idea of the theme I was going for but just in case you are just now reading this post, here a little background:

The inspiration for this nursery came from my personal love for carnivals, circus and animals =] from the beginning we knew we wanted to keep the sex of our little peanut a surprise, we wanted a theme that was gender neutral, modern and very colorful, so Circus fit perfectly!

We worked on a budget and DIY most of the elements, the room that we started with did not have lights besides a very small one right next to the entry door, so my husband and father-in-law worked on adding can lights, book shelves and closet. I was in charge of the smaller projects and I have to say that my favorite was the elephant lamp. But the most meaningful has to be the bathroom door, I painted a section of North America and South America and added hearts to where Santiago, Chile and California, USA are in the map so we can show our little Peanut where Mom and Dad are from =]

Below you can see him in my favorite onesie smiling at the hot air ballons, I can’t believe how fast he is growing!

The very last project I worked on for the room was the cardboard name sign on top of the crib, since we didn’t know the sex of our Baby, I waited until after delivery, I had already set a side a big box that I was planning on using, but that same week I had planned to start with the sign my Cousin send us the tall giraffe, so I used that box instead, which allowed me to make the sign a lot bigger than my initial plan.

I have to warn you all that this is a very photo-heavy post, it was too hard to pic fewer photos because I felt that they will not make justice to the room, so here you go! lots and lots of photos plus the details of the room, elements and and organized list of all the resources and tutorials/post I did for for the nursery after the jump!

Introducing baby Peanut!

Born at 9am 10/11/12
9 pounds 2 ounces, 21.6 inches

We are so excited to finally introduce our little baby Peanut! Labor and delivery was nothing like we had planned and hoped for – I wanted a birth with as less intervention as possible and drug free but due to my low fluids at 40 weeks 3 days, they decided to induce me. and after 26 hours of labor I ended up with an emergency C-section, but everything was worth it to have this little man with us. Recovery is going super slow and that’s why I took so long to share the news here =[

I am very blessed to have my mom and Ken to help me and baby Conner is just an awesome baby, so I know that it will not be so long before I am back to normal. Until then here a few pics of our little bundle of Joy!

Nursery: Ikea Fyllen laundry basket turned toy basket with appliqué

Even though we already have a toy storage bench for the nursery, Ken thought that it would be good to have storage for toys that were bigger than the little cubes we have in our bench (I will show that later) So on our last trip to Ikea we picked up a fyllen laundry basket in red. I liked how simple it was and also the price $7.00 (we got it for $5.00 because it was on sale), but there was something missing!!

I fixed the “something missing” with a very simple felt appliqué in the shape of a circus seal =] Since I only used materials I had around the house, my assorted embroidery colors did not include gray but I found and old grey yarn that matched almost perfectly with my gray felt.

You can see the before and after with the basket containing stuffed animals, I didn’t like how busy it looked without anything on the front, but I didn’t want to cover the whole thing either. SO I think the appliqué made the perfect balance.

To make the appliqué I first drafted the seal on my computer, decided on the size and printed a pattern. cut all the pieces I was going to need in different colors (even tho I only used 2 colors of felt), then I pin them to the basket.

Nursery: Ikea poang chair recover

As I shared on my last post, I have a lot of projects I finish before going to bed rest that I never got to share here, so I am going to start with one I wish I would have taken pictures of the process. I know not a lot of people would not go the DIY route specially when it’s just an Ikea chair, but as you all know I love renovating them!

For the nursery I knew I wanted the poang chair, at first I wanted the rocking chair version, but in one visit to Ikea I tried both and found the rocking version uncomfortable for me (I’m pretty tall) to get up easily.

Ofcourse on that trip to Ikea I did not get the chair, since I had months before I was actually going to start with the nursery, I hunted on Craiglist until I found the chair and the footstool for $20, but with no covers. That was actually perfect because I wanted to make my own cushions and covers anyways. I wanted a thinker foam because I figured I’ll be on that chair a lot, the price of the chair and covers I wanted at Ikea would have been $198 ($129 for the chair and $69 for the footstool) but I actually spent only $60 on mine making the cushions from scratch thanks to holiday sale coupons =] I say pretty good!

I also decided to paint the structure and made all the covers very easy to remove because I figured I’ll be washing it very often, I decided to attach it to the chair in a different way, so that the back will be covered with fabric, it seemed a lot cleaner to me than the original Ikea covers.

Taking it slow

Oh! well, hello everyone!! As all of you might have notice, I’ve been taking a little break from everything. The last few weeks have been an emotional roller coaster for me, and this time I can’t only blame the pregnancy hormones.

I wanted to share a little bit of what happened the day after I took my 38 weeks photo, here you can see me playing with my “halloween” t-shirt, even tho I just played in Photoshop and added a face to my shirt so it’s not really a halloween shirt but it’s close enough because by that time I will hopefully have not a belly to dress but a little baby =]
