Making an easy Happy fall y'all wood sign with lights

I was super excited when last week I found the perfect wood sign at Joann at 50% discount, it comes with most of the materials to make a wood marquee lightbox sign. Of course, I had to add my own spin to it, and change the letters! I love how it turned out and it was super easy! so here is how I did it

I know that I was lucky to find these boxes on sale, but I actually found a very similar box, without the designs and the lights on Amazon that can definitely be customized with whatever fall design you want!

So now I want to share with you how I made mine and how you can also make one by either handwriting or with the files that I am sharing at the bottom of the post!

Since I bought the wood box in the store, I was not able to find the exact same one to link for you, but as I mentioned before, I did find a very similar wood plaque.

You can see the original one I purchased below:

The box comes with a stencil so you can paint the letters, the lights to put from the back (they use 2 AA batteries), the hardware necessary to hang and instructions.

It's a pretty sweet deal, but the bad part for me is that I wanted to customize the box with my own lettering instead of using the stencil that comes with the box.

Tracing the design

OPTION 1 – In my case, I used regular anti-dust chalk to sketch the letters (I use a chalk holder because I don't like how messy my hands get with chalk).

The good part of this is that you can mess up, erase (or wipe the chalk in this case), and try again until you are happy with the result.

OPTION 2 – If you don't feel like freehand drawing on the sign, a good alternative is to print the design in the size you want to use in regular print paper.

Then, using white carbon tracing paper, transfer it to the wood plaque, after you have outlines you can either work your letters with chalk to make sure they are just like you want or move straight to the next step, painting the letters.

Painting the design

After I was happy with how my design looked with the chalk tracing, I used my favorite white paint markers, 2mm, and 1mm to create an outline of my lettering.

You can also use Posca paint markers since they already come in a pack.

The painting process is very straightforward, start with one side if you are not sure where the thickness of the letter goes, and then add thickness to all the downstrokes (preferably on each side, to make spacing better)

Once you are done with the outline and the marker is dry (give it 15-20 minutes to be completely sure)

And then use a wet rag to wipe all the chalk off (even if it gets really wet)

Let your box dry and then you can finish up painting the inside of the design.

I used a gold marker for the inside of my FALL letters to bright a little bit of contrast.

I used the 1mm marker and went over all my lines again, then created the thicks on the script and used a gold marker to fill in the FALL part.

The hubs help me put the lights on its place and it was ready for display!

I love how easy it was and how awesome it looks with the lights! I think I might need to look for more of those to use as gifts =]
